Whisky #379 – Glenglassaugh Evolution Single Malt

IMG_5489.JPGGlenglassaugh Evolution Single Malt. Speyside, Scotland. ABV: 57.2%. Tasted at my good friend Kiwi’s place, $27 (100mL bottle split).

Colour: Extremely pale straw.

Nose: Grassy notes with a citrus prickle.

Palate: Lemon sherbet zings on the front of the palate. White pepper and oak notes too.

Finish: Warmth tingles on the front of the palate and all around the mouth. It’s quite a long and dry finish with some salty lemon notes.

Comments: Making use of first fill ex-bourbon casks (from George Dickel I believe), there’s definitely an abundance of fresh oak and peppery notes but not much evidence of the typical honeyed vanilla flavours you might expect. There’s a freshness about it and some nice flavours going on, but it’s not a mouthfeel that I really warm to – it just comes across as a little too young and brash. It represents one of the NAS releases since Glenglassaugh was brought back to life, the distillery having been mothballed from 1986 until it was refurbished and recommenced production under new ownership in 2008.

Having moved from Perth across to Sydney for work, I couldn’t bring my entire whisky collection…some of that was bequeathed to a few of my good mates before I departed. However I did pick up a handful of 100mL bottle splits before I left as they were much more easily transportable and also provide the opportunity to try a broader range of whiskies without lashing out on a full bottle. Whisky #349 – Glenglassaugh 1973 39 Year Old Single Malt – The Massandra Connection – Muscat Wine Cask Finish

IMG_4430Glenglassaugh 1973 39 Year Old Single Malt – The Massandra Connection – Muscat Wine Cask Finish. Highlands, Scotland. ABV: 44.1%. Tasted at home, $100 (100mL bottle).

Colour: Brassy amber.

Nose: Sweet leather; mixed dried fruits, especially sultanas. Dark toffee notes too. A slight nose prickle which is very tolerable when the whisky has such a top nose.

Palate: Creamed honey and vanilla. Velvety smooth, buttery oily mouthfeel. Wow.

Finish: A super smooth salty-sweet fade, medium length yet a somewhat dryish finish.

Comments: Amazingly delicious, it’s a huge challenge to resist consuming the whole 100mL sample in one sitting. So sublime it’s impossible to make any tongue-in-cheek remarks about this one.

IMG_4197Glenglassaugh Evolution Single Malt. Highlands, Scotland. ABV: 50%. Tasted at the Craigellachie Hotel, £4.80.

Colour: Super light straw.

Nose: Fruity, citrus aromas, hessian sacks.

Palate: Dry mouthfeel. Lemon, dried banana; quite tangy.

Finish: A sherbety tingle, quite a long finish. Salty and sweet balance.

Comments: Lighter and a lot fruitier than I was expecting, but more citrusy rather than dried fruits and Christmas cake sort of flavours. Not too shabby.

Whisky #300 – The MacPhail’s Collection 1986 Glenglassaugh Single Malt

IMG_4134The MacPhail’s Collection 1986 Glenglassaugh Single Malt. Highlands, Scotland. Bottled 1998. 40%. Tasted at The Pot Still (Glasgow), £4.65.

Colour: Rich golden honey.

Nose: Freshly toasted bread with honey on top.

Palate: Oily mouthfeel at first, fruity with a good balance of sweetness and tartness – think pineapple.

Finish: Quite a drying finish. Soft woody notes in the fade.

Comments: Geez these whiskies in Scotland are much cheaper than we pay back in Australia! Not a bad drop – I don’t think I’ve tried a whisky from Glenglassaugh before so I can’t compare it, however it’s not bad at all…worth another taste. This Gordon & MacPhail’s release was distilled in 1986, the year that Glenglassaugh was mothballed for quite some time, until being sold and subsequently reopened in 2008.
