Whisky #223 – Drambuie 15 Year Old Speyside Malt Whisky Liqueur

IMG_3683Drambuie 15 Year Old Speyside Malt Whisky Liqueur. Speyside, Scotland. ABV: 43.00%. Tasted at my mate Joel’s place (to wrap up the whisky tasting afternoon).

Colour: Amber gold.

Nose: Some subtle herbaceous notes.

Palate: Sweet honey; syrupy clove flavours.

Finish: Very smooth; some cinnamon notes to finish.

Comments: It’s certainly not as sweet as I had expected. At 43% I guess that shouldn’t surprise, but having only had liqueurs at typically around 20% I guess it’s quite a different beast. Much more towards the whisky end of a theoretical whisky-to-liqueur spectrum. I haven’t had the standard Drambuie liqueur to compare it with, but all in all a fine way to finish up the afternoon’s whisky tasting. The sweetness of the Drambuie 15 is definitely a welcome palate cleanser after all the peat we finished on with the Laphroig PX Cask, Bruichladdich Octomore and Blackadder Smoking Islay Raw Cask (Sherry Cask).

Whisky #94 – Glenfiddich Malt Scotch Whisky Liqueur

IMG_3389Glenfiddich Malt Scotch Whisky Liqueur. Speyside, Scotland. ABV: 40.00%.

Tasted at home, $0, courtesy of my cousins Trudi & Marcus.

Colour: Golden viscous honey.

Nose: Surprisingly strong alcohol feints. Some oak and grain aromas.

Palate: Not as sickly sweet as I was expecting, though still some soft syrupy sensations. Amazing alliteration also. Cloves and cinnamon are probably the main flavours, though neither is really jumping out at you.

Finish: There’s definitely some sweetness I was expecting in the finish, along with a hint of cinnamon. Oily, creamy mouthfeel.

Comments: On a spectrum of whisky at one end and liqueur at the other, it definitely (and somewhat surprisingly) leans more towards the whisky side. Overall it’s ok, but it’s not as unique a drop as I was hoping for.

Whisky #51: Fireball Cinnamon Whisky Liqueur

photo 1Fireball Cinnamon Whisky Liqueur. Canada. ABV: 33.00%. $55 (bottle), tasted at my friends Tim & Claire’s place.

Appearance: Bright golden colour, syrupy – sticks to the side of the glass.

Nose: Like sticking your nose into a bunch of cinnamon sticks. Or maybe crushing them up and snorting one up your nose.

Palate: Sweet & overwhelming cinnamon & clove flavours explode in your mouth.

Finish: Oily hot spice at the tip of the tongue. Kind of a similar sensation to eating some chilli chocolate (not saying the flavours are chocolatey, just the sweetness followed by the heat after sensation).

Comments: My first Canadian of the year, also the first whisky liqueur, though at 33% ABV it’s more akin to a traditional whisky. Cinnamon aromas are too strong to really enjoy it.
