Springbank Kilkerran, “New make” D/1494 sample. Unknown ABV. Campbeltown, Scotland. $0, free sample from Alan Anderson after his “Whisky for Dafties” show at the Perth Fringe.
Colour: Totally clear like water.
Nose: Not very nice, like sweaty socks. Strong alcohol fumes.
Palate: Spice, smoke and peat. Overpowering.
Finish: Plenty of heat that sticks around like a nasty Estonian vodka.
Comments: Unrefined, brutal. Not pleasant to drink I’m afraid. It was even less pleasant last night when after brushing my teeth & climbing into bed, I grabbed a water bottle and took a drink, only to realise that the bottle contained my Kilkerran sample given to me on Friday night by Alan Anderson after his comedy show. Toothpaste and whisky do NOT mix. I can only hope that being in a soft plastic water bottle for 48 hours may have somehow affected the whisky. Should have tried it on Friday straight after the show, though to be fair I had possibly already had more than enough that night. I don’t even remember getting home!
Overall, this is the first entry into the “Truly Awful” whisky category of the project so far. Sorry Alan, but thanks all the same for your generous gesture. All the best for the rest of your tour!

OAft… poor poor Kilkerran. First of all, glad you liked the show. I love your dance video.
New Make is NOT whisky. It is almost 70%abv however.
You are one of only a tiny handful of people who have been privileged to taste it. What you are getting is effectively the little sister of Springbank. Same people make it in the distillery next door.
Make sure you try their Work In Progress because it is lovely.

Alan! Thank you for checking out the site, glad you like the video. It was indeed a cracking show you put on, my friends and I all raved about it to many folks.
I later learnt about new make not becoming whisky until it has been matured for at least 3 years and realise I was probably a little harsh both on (Kilkerran and yourself!), however I stand by my observation that whisky (or new make for that matter!) and toothpaste do not good bedfellows make! Still, learning about things like new make and trying different drops are all part of the Whisky a Day experience – nay, the Whisky a Day lifestyle – and I’m grateful that you’ve helped expand my knowledge and experience in such an entertaining manner!
I hope the rest of your tour went well, looking forward to seeing you out here in Oz again for another tour!
Sláinte!
